The Gear Guru Initiative
We want to bring the conversation back to buying outdoor gear. Our Gear Gurus are experienced outdoor enthusiasts who are here to help you choose the right gear with confidence.

Troy Loxley - Certified Guru
Everyone has that one friend who owns every piece of gear under the sun and somehow manages to bring all of it on every adventure. That’s Troy.
He has an almost unhealthy obsession with outdoor gear, and he’s always on the lookout for the next piece of kit. A kayaker, skier, runner, climber, and mountain biker, Troy seems to collect outdoor sports mainly to justify buying more equipment.
Need advice on gear, trails, or your next adventure? Troy probably has the answer. And if he doesn’t, he’ll almost certainly have a story that relates.
Holly Blower - Certified Guru
With a passion for the outdoors and sustainability, Holly knows the value of good gear. Whether she's surfing, running mountain trails, skiing fresh lines or exploring somewhere new, being outdoors is a big part of her life.
She's also a big believer in giving quality gear a second life — and knows a thing or two about finding a bargain along the way. From local surf shops and charity shops to her personal favourite, Vinted “on the go”, she's always on the hunt for her next great find.
Need help finding a specific piece of gear, choosing between options, or just want a second opinion? Holly is always happy to help.
Fraser Hinckley - Certified Guru
A true mountain enthusiast, Fraser is our resident ski touring expert. This is a man who gets genuinely excited about something as simple as a new ski strap hitting the market.
If I ever found myself on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?, Fraser would be my “phone a friend” for anything ski-related. In fact, you’ll probably be doing him a favour by chatting skiing—his friends have heard enough about the perfect ski width, shaving grams off binding weights, and the next line he’s planning to ski.
Based in British Columbia, Canada, Fraser spends his days testing gear, chasing snow, and talking all things backcountry. When he’s not skiing for pleasure, you guessed it, he works as a qualified ski guide. If it’s ski related, there’s a good chance he’s already tried it, researched it, or has a strong opinion about it.
Harry Batchelor - Certified Guru
You think of nerd, you think of Batch... gear nerd, of course.
This man chews through gear reviews, specs and information like there's no tomorrow. When he's not out kayaking, running... or, more likely, kayaking again, he's got his head buried in his phone geeking out over the latest bits of kit.
A normal conversation with Batch usually starts with, "Have you seen that new...?" No? Don't worry, you're about to hear all about it.
He's not just all talk, though. He's been ticking off some of the world's best kayaking destinations and has spent countless hours testing gear on the water. So, if you're planning a paddling trip, looking for your next kayak, or just want a second opinion on some kit, get in touch. Batch will happily point you in the right direction.
Piers Oliphant - Certified Guru
Piers is your typical can't sit still kind of person. If he's got a spare hour, you can guarantee he's bogging a turn, carping a kayak roll, walking up a hill (on a run), or chasing the next adventure. Of course, once he's back in the pub, the stories get even better—those waves were definitely barrels, that climb was much steeper than it looked, and Strava definitely got the time wrong.
His love for the outdoors has sent him on an endless quest to find the perfect gear and more sports to buy gear for. He'll happily admit that some of those purchases have been an attempt to make up for a slight lack of talent... but that's all part of the fun. Whatever you're looking for, chances are Piers has used it, bought it, thought about buying it, or has it sitting on his ever-growing wishlist.
So, if you're unsure about a piece of gear, planning your next adventure, or just fancy swapping a few outdoor stories, get in touch. Piers is always happy to have a chat.
